Kylin, a Secure Chinese OS

by Dan on July 22, 2010

I have been reading a paper entitled US-China Economic and Security Review Commission Report on the Capability of the People’s Republic of China to Conduct Cyber Warfare and Computer Network Exploitation for a class I am taking on CIT security issues. I just learned about a Chinese secure OS called Kylin, so naturally I pulled up the Wikipedia article on it. I found only a couple of paragraphs. The article mentions Security-Enhanced Linux (SELinux), the United States government’s secure OS, largely used by the NSA. Wikipedia contains considerably more information about SELinux than Kylin.

Luckily I was able to find a more detailed article at the Entering the Networked World blog. The author, Jonathan D. Abolins, cites an article stating that Kylin is merely a plagiarized version of FreeBSD 5.3. Abolins gives some good perspectives on the OS and its security.

This was news to me, you may want to check it out if not already familiar with it.
