Primary Cyber Attack Target is Critical Infrastructures

by Dan on July 22, 2010

Reuters article was recently released discussing the fact that half of the critical infrastructure suppliers have been the target of cyber attacks, based on a survey of security software firms conducted by McAfee.

The article gives the usual song and dance about how cyber attacks are under-reported due to companies concealing their vulnerabilities, especially financial institutions. Then it confirms everything I’ve read lately, indicating that cyber attacks are becoming more prevalent and sophisticated. I also found it interesting that 40% of the firms surveyed “expect a major cyber security incident within the next year.” This seems to be the general consensus of information security professionals. The U.S. Army is beefing up its cyber warfare capabilities, and Hillary Clinton just exhorted NATO to deal with cyber terrorism.

Overall, it does seem inevitable that a more serious cyber attack will be launched in the near future, and it seems that our government and many private corporations are totally unprepared to handle it.
